Dok-7 regulates neuromuscular synapse formation by recruiting Crk and Crk-L [Research Papers]
Agrin, released by motor neurons, promotes neuromuscular synapse formation by stimulating MuSK, a receptor tyrosine kinase expressed in skeletal muscle. Phosphorylated MuSK recruits docking protein-7 (Dok-7), an adaptor protein that is expressed selectively in muscle. In the absence of Dok-7, neuromuscular synapses fail to form, and mutations that impair Dok-7...

An increase in non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae infections in Poland †molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of strains isolated from past outbreaks and those currently circulating in Poland
Conclusions: The genetic similarity of non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae strains causing infection suggests that the strains represent a single clone. They may possess additional virulence genes in a chromosome, related with higher pathogenicity and invasiveness. The genetic changes have not been followed by resistance to antibiotics. Selective recognition and elimination of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-reactive B cells by a recombinant fusion protein AChR-Fc in myasthenia gravis in vitro
Abstract: AChR-reactive B cells play a key role in the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis (MG) by producing autoantibodies. Selective elimination of AChR-reactive B cells will be a promising way to treat MG. Thus, we generated a fusion protein (referred to as AChR-Fc) composed of the human extracellular domain of AChR...

Bilateral video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy has a surgical extent similar to that of transsternal extended thymectomy with more favorable early surgical outcomes for myasthenia gravis patients
Conclusions The BVT was a safe procedure with a surgical extent and amount similar to those of T-3b thymectomy and less invasive for patients with MG. Long-term follow-up assessment and more extensive data are mandatory to verify the early surgical outcomes. Twenty-one-year survival in an invasive thymoma successfully treated with seven-fold iterative surgery [Case report - Thoracic oncologic]
We report a case of a 48-year-old patient with an initial diagnosis of myasthenia gravis who underwent radical thymectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy in 1988 for an invasive thymoma. Six years after the first operation the patient was submitted to re-iterative surgery (pleural recurrence) and, as of the period from 1994...

A Comparison of EMG and Muscle Biopsy in ICU Weakness
Conclusions EMG and MB are complementary investigations. They agreed completely in four cases but in the rest of the cases there was uncertainty as to the primary process based on the results of electrophysiological studies. In only one case was there a clear discordance between electrophysiological studies and muscle biopsy....

Myasthenia and related disorders of the neuromuscular junction
Our understanding of transmission at the neuromuscular junction has increased greatly in recent years. We now recognise a wide variety of autoimmune and genetic diseases that affect this specialised synapse, causing muscle weakness and fatigue. These disorders greatly affect quality of life and rarely can be fatal. Myasthenia gravis is...

Conclusions: In our series, 24% of patients had disease resolution and 23% had generalized symptoms. Our larger cohort confirms previous findings that treated and untreated pediatric patients with OMG have a relatively low risk of developing generalized symptoms and that related amblyopia is readily reversible. Although our treatments were more...

Myasthenia Gravis, and related disorders affecting transmission across the neuromuscular junction, represent diagnostic and treatment challenges. Recent epidemiological studies have shown that disease prevalence has increased since the 1950s in the US (NIH, The National Women's Health Centre, 2004). This is partly due to heightened awareness, better diagnostic methods and...

On the frontline: What an optometrist needs to know about myasthenia gravis
Conclusions: Because patients with undiagnosed myasthenia gravis may present initially with ocular signs or symptoms, it is important for the optometrist to be familiar with the condition and the simple “in-office†tests that can be performed to establish a tentative diagnosis and management plan. The optometrist can also participate in...

Conclusions: This investigation revealed that age, length of ventilation and TISS-28 on day one were strongly predictive for outcome. Airway limitation and exercise intolerance in well-regulated myasthenia gravis patients.
CONCLUSION: Well-regulated MG patients, especially those using pyridostigmine, tend to have an airway obstruction. The modest airway limitation might be a contributing factor to their fatigue. Patients who are not using acetylcholinesterase inhibitor seem to have diminished exercise endurance in spite of their clinically complete remission. PMID: 20586729 [PubMed -...

In vivo adsorption of autoantibodies in myasthenia gravis using Nanodisc-incorporated acetylcholine receptor.
In this study, we have successfully incorporated the AChR protein purified from Torpedo Californicus into a Nanodisc (ND) membrane scaffold protein/phospholipid structure. We go on to demonstrate the effectiveness of this ND-AChR complex, administered intravenously, in the in vivo down-modulation of anti-AChR antibodies and subsequent amelioration of clinical disease in...
