Hi Nessa
In my experience there is no medical solution or pill which can prevent alcohol addiction. There is one sure fire method of recovery which is to go to Alcoholics Anonymous. Many millions of people have found relief from a hopeless state. If you google AA and your local area you should find a meeting near by to you. There is no cure from alcohol addiction to be found in pills( again in my experience )
Does this help ??

Instead of a standard 30-day alcoholism treatment program, an ideal program will last up to a year. Think about it: one month simply is not enough time to learn a new set of life skills. A good example of this point would be learning a foreign language. If you were learning French, fluency would only be possible if you were living in France for an extended period of time. If you were only visiting Paris for 30 days, you might pick up a phrase or two, but French would not come naturally to you.

Alcohol is a depressant, slowing the activity of the central nervous system. This leads to reduced inhibitions, as well as a deterioration in coordination and reflexes. Consumption of alcohol can lead to aggression, confusion, nausea, vomiting, unconsciousness and risk taking behaviour.

The disinhibiting effect of alcohol is one of the main reasons it is used in so many social situations. Other effects of moderate alcohol intake include dizziness and talkativeness; the immediate effects of a larger amount of alcohol include slurred speech, disturbed sleep, nausea, and vomiting. Alcohol, even at low doses, significantly impairs the judgment and coordination required to drive a car safely.

Anti-depressants seem to be a frequent tool in the treatment of addiction and many other behaviour related problems. I was wondering why this is since addiction in and of itself is not related to depression. I realise that some drugs are used for multiple uses, such as Reglan which is for acid reflux but also for increasing lactation in mothers.

So is that the case with anti-depressants, or is there another reason behind it?

In my opinion some Alcoholics myself included , suffer from depression, and anti depressents do help , however anti depressents did not stop me drinking or taking drugs and have only become a benefit after I had stopped drinking. The only sure way I know of stopping drinking or taking drugs is by going to AA or the appropriate drug fellowship.

Same problem with my Dad. It's hard for him to control his drinking. I think he's getting worse as he gets older, and I am worried it will affect his health. But he doesn't want to go to a rehab.

Hi jomend725
I know it is very tough to watch someone decline through alcohol, all you can do is suggest they go to AA or go with them , only if they want to !
