Here you will find info for therapists, teachers, researchers and students on a variety of eating disorders. Topics discussed include what an eating disorder is, where to get help, athletics and over-exercising, self esteem and what to do if you are worried about a friend. ANRED are a non-profit organization providing information about anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and other less well-known food and weight disorders.

ANRED offer a wealth of information on the varying forms of anorexia. They discuss the warning signs that can precede diagnosis, such as excessive exercise behaviours and self harm. They take an in-depth look at all facets of the condition, covering such subjects as male eating disorders, anorexia in pregnancy, anorexia in coupled with diabetes and eating disorders in older people. Their site also has a self-help section where you can take a confidential test to see if you may be at risk.

The Priory website has been written and designed by Dr Peter Rowan, the consultant psychiatrist in charge of the Eating Disorder Unit at The Priory Hospital, Roehampton, London.

Their site discusses the general features of Anorexia Nervosa, what causes it and the associated risks of extreme weight loss. Treatment on the NHS is discussed along with the expected pattern of recovery. The Priory offers its own treatment regime on an inpatient or outpatient basis - and the services they offer are explained in some detail. Psychotherapy, family involvement and support groups are also detailed as complementary measures.

Their online anorexia factsheet explains what the condition is and how it is characterised, why some people tend to become affected more than others and how to identify the main symptoms. MamasHealth.com is a US website aimed at providing clear, simple and straightforward information about health and wellbeing.

Their Eating Disorder page covers what anorexia is, what the symptoms are and who is most at risk. They highlight the many medical risks associated with anorexia, including shrunken bones, mineral loss, low body temperature, an irregular heartbeat, permanent failure of normal growth, development of osteoporosis and bulimia nervosa. Family Doctor is operated by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) - a medical organization representing more than 93,700 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students.

Although based in the US, most of their advice on anorexia applies across the board. Their information takes a teenage perspective, explaining what the condition is and why it can become dangerous - leading to stomach, heart, kidney and dental problems. They discuss the warning signs along with how eating disorders can be treated and offer helpful inks to other related organisations.

Their factsheet on Anorexia Nervosa defines what the condition is, the expected symptoms (excessive exercise, low bodyweight, secrecy, use of appetite suppressants, etc) and how it can affect health. Their anorexia content looks at the reasons behind the condition - covering such determining factors as a distorted view of body shape and low self esteem. The associated health risks are detailed such as depression, delayed puberty, loss of sex drive, osteoporosis, lack of menstruation, etc. They also look at who is susceptible to anorexia, what causes it and where to go for further help.

NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a large grassroots mental health organisation based in the United States. They are dedicated to improving the lives of those living with serious mental illness and their families.

Their advice on Anorexia Nervosa covers how those affected lose weight, how the condition works both psychologically and physically - and the common warning signs to watch out for. Treatment and prevention methods are also covered, as are the different age groups likely to be affected. Although written from an American perspective, the information you will find here applies to all those in contact with anorexia.
