A self-help organisation for people who are experiencing or have experienced depression, and their carers. Members receive six newsletters a year. Pen and telephone friends and some local groups are available. Also offers advice to people wishing to start a support group. This website includes details of their information line: staffed 4 hours a day, answerphone at other times.

YoungMinds is the national charity committed to improving the mental health of all babies, children and young people up to the age of 25.

YoungMinds provides a Parents Information Service for anyone with concerns about the mental health of a child or young person. Other services include training and consultancy and publications for young people, parents and professionals covering a range of issues including depression, bullying and self-harm. A bi-monthly magazine is available for everyone who works with children and young people.

A national organisation offering support to those in distress who feel suicidal or despairing and need someone to talk to. The telephone number of your local branch can be found in the telephone directory.

Samaritans also provides a widely used e-mail service (not a chatroom but they endeavour to answer within 24 hours).

BBC Health offers a complete A-Z illness listing, with related articles and guides plus a message board where users can share their experiences.

The BBC offers the facts on depression in layperson's terms as well as advice on living with the condition and how to go about treating it.
